Pass It On

I was reminded yesterday of how much our world needs kindness.

Yesterday was a crappy day. Really crappy. I won't go into the details, but my morning was not good. On my lunch, I ran to the bank quickly and then to Chipotle to grab some comfort food. Chipotle is my go-to because it's DELICIOUS but yesterday my decision was made more out of "maybe Chipotle will make me feel better."

Look at that mountain of deliciousness. Nom.

Turning to food for comfort? Ugh. Not good, but that's not a habit of mine, so I let it slide.

I'm in line...the long lunch line...place my delicious order, and when I get to the register, realize that I forgot my wallet at home. NOOOO. I remember exactly where I left it too, which made this so much more annoying.

I tell the cashier that I forgot my wallet...womp. Can I pay with a check? No.
UGHHHH!!

And this is when the sweet counter person (ya know, the one who keeps things moving between the line and cashier) says "don't worry about it...I've got this."

UM WHAT?! Are you sure? It's ok...I'll just eat napkins...

But no, she insists.

Oh man. What a perfectly wonderful random act of kindness. She had no idea how much I needed that.

Since I'm not sure if good deeds are still good deeds if you toot your own horn, I try not to speak of the random acts of kindness I've done for other people. But don't you sometimes wonder "will anyone ever pay it forward to me?" Sure, the person in front of me in the Starbucks drive-thru has paid for my coffee before...that's always nice. But I don't think I've ever had an act of kindness bestowed upon me when I really needed a smile.

So, kind Chipotle worker, this is for you. Thank you for your kindness on a rough day, I'll do my best to pay it forward.

I encourage you to do the same. While a smile, or coffee, or lunch might seem like nothing to you, it could very well turn the recipient's day around. :)

Encouraging Chivalry

Update 9/9/14: This post was linked up as part of the Not Alone Series topic, "Oh so chivalrous!"

Have you read this post by Matt Walsh? It's thought-provoking, FULL of solid Truth, and calls men to action.

I forget in the day-to-day that "chivalry is dead". And actually, I've heard that before and argued with whoever proclaimed it that chivalry IS NOT dead. Unfortunately, however, my perception on this is skewed.

I blame it on all of the awesome men in my life. Holy, God-fearing, women-loving men.
They hold doors, allow women to go before them for communion, help me with my coat, etc.

But what about all of the men who I don't know? Or even more so, what about the women who don't know the men I know?

I can imagine that it would be very discouraging to think that chivalry is dead. How sad.
And how incredibly sad for a woman who desires to have a man be chivalrous, to give up on that dream of a knight in shining armor!

I've read articles and posts where the author says that we need to focus on instilling an expectation of chivalry in our children. We need to raise our boys to be chivalrous and our girls to be accepting and grateful for chivalry.

I agree with this. We must raise our children in this manner.

But what about those of us who aren't raising children? What about the college students? What about the young professionals? Perhaps we must wait until we have children of our own in order to encourage chivalry?

Not at all.
There is so much that we can do to encourage chivalry at all ages and places in life!

For the Men

Chivalrous men! Please continue to be gentlemen. Do not allow the lazy men of today to influence how you act.

Rather, you must be an example to other men. Chivalry begets chivalry. Encourage your boorish friends to be more gallant! If you let a lady have your seat, nudge your buddy to do the same! Hold one another accountable.

Asking your friend to hold the second set of doors while you're holding the first isn't nagging, it's reminding him to be the gentleman he was made to be. Hopefully just seeing you open the first door will give him the push he needs to grab the second one, but better safe than sorry!

Overall, do not allow your less honorable friends to discourage you.
And if ever a lady yells that she doesn't need your help with the door/with her coat/etc. just respond with a smile and a courteous "I didn't do _______ because you're a woman/girl/lady, I did it because I'm a gentleman."
I guarantee she will not know what to say, especially if you remain polite.

Be like Matt and call others to action.

For the Ladies

Alright, ladies, I am certain that many of you appreciate and enjoy chivalry. However, how are you supposed to increase chivalry? I mean, we're mere women...we have no influence on whether or not a "guy" is gentlemanly....right?

Wrong!
The way in which we react to chivalry will influence its longevity.

I encourage you to stop being embarrassed when you encounter a gentleman.
There have been times when a man holds the door for me when I'm a good 20+ strides from the door. Gosh, I feel horrible! I'm ashamed to admit that more often than not, I barely meet his gaze and perhaps I'll give him a sorrowful "thanks!"...all because I feel bad.

Or how many times has a young man surprised you by helping you with your coat? I never expect it, and due to my surprise, I usually give a little laugh and what might be perceived as a sarcastic "thank you".
(when really, I just feel awkward and try to be goofy instead)

Or have you ever neglected to thank the man who is coming out of a building and holds the door as you're entering? It's possible he wouldn't hear me, you think, and besides, it's not like it's a big deal...

I want to encourage you to stop doing this.
Don't stop thanking, but change the way in which you thank.
Stop acting embarrassed when a man treats you like a lady, you ARE a lady! Don't make him feel embarrassed for treating you as such!
And never treat an act of chivalry as "nothing" or else you're feeding into the mindset that chivalry simply doesn't matter.

When a gentleman opens the door for you, pulls out your chair, etc., look him in the eye, give him a warm smile and a grateful "Thank You!"

This is called positive reinforcement. (I know because I have a Psychology degree. BAM.) If we want men to be more chivalrous, we must encourage them to continue their chivalry! Please push past whatever it is that hold you back from appreciating his chivalrous gesture. Like I said before, chivalry begets chivalry. And in this case, a man's encouraged chivalry will lead to his continued chivalry.

Chivalry can be encouraged at all ages.
Gentlemen shouldn't be afraid to behave like gentlemen and ladies shouldn't be ashamed to expect to be treated like ladies.

Strive to be the most authentic you you can be.

the quickity quicks

Linking up with Jen for the first time in forrrrevvverrrr.....

[1] Happy All Saints Day! Cassie Pease Designs asked on Facebook what our favorite saints were...without hesitation, my favorite saint is St. Gianna. I mean, I love allll of them, but if I had to choose, and we're assuming that Mama Mary is a given, then I'd say St. Gianna. She's seriously just one of the greatest role models of perfect love and sacrifice.

Ok, and I really love St. Joseph, but again, I feel like that's a given ;)

[2] I've been sick off-and-on this whole week and yesterday I completely forgot that it was Halloween....multiple times. Like, I would remember...and then forget.....and then remember again. This was the first year in my entire life that I haven't dressed up. Though I honestly didn't miss it.

[3] I just have to share some of my current favorite songs. I can't not.

That 70s Song - The Cab

[4] Come to Me - Goo Goo Dolls

[5] Have you stumbled upon Chris's blog yet? He's a former UIUC student and current FOCUS missionary. He always has thought provoking posts, but his most recent guest post on Same Sex Attraction is a winner for sure. Seriously. Go read it.

[6] Anyone keeping up with the Not Alone Series? Jen and I are completely overwhelmed with how many people we've reached. Who would have thought that a little wondering, wishing, hoping would have turned into all of this? What blessings. What grace. TYF.
And this week's posts blew me away! Check em out!

[7] Ok, I can't end this post without sharing this meme. It kills me.

Have a great weekend and head over to Jen's for more QTs!

sitting waiting wishing....

....for some normalcy.

Perhaps you've noticed that really all I've been posting lately are my NAS contributions. Or maybe not.

Either way, world, I've been less-than-present for the past couple months for a couple of reasons:

1. I'm fundraising my salary.

2. I moved into my new apt Aug 1st....and haven't set up internet

BUT this week, I FINALLY got the interwebs connected in my new place. I'm uber happy and really did not think that I could make it this long. I don't have a data plan, so basically after I left work, I was without wifi.

Aaaaaand the library closes at 9PM, so from then on I was forced to do without.
Forced.

I read 5 Nicholas Sparks books in 2 weeks. No joke.

Actually, I semi-chose to wait. Since I'm travelling so much for work, it didn't really make sense to pay for wifi I wasn't using.

But I've reached my breaking point, so if I can ever drag myself away from the beauty that is Netflix (thanks Kevin and Liz for letting me use your account!!!), I'll be blogging a tad more often.
I do have 32 drafts I could work on....

However, I might be eating my own words since I'm still quite a ways away from being "fully funded" and have to keep going until that's done.

Shameless plug:
The Lord has been pushing me to use every possible resource at my fingertips (quite literally at this moment), it is now that I humbly ask that if you and yours are at all interested in joining my monthly support team and helping me to get back on campus, please contact me. I'm not going to post the info here to keep a semblance of privacy for my organization, but if you contact me directly, I would be more than thrilled to chat with you about how you can directly help to build a Culture of Life.

Thanks and I promise to write soon!!!

Not Alone Series: Britt's Survey!

Britt emailed us a few weeks ago with the idea to do a survey of sorts and I was so excited. These surveys bring me back to the days of email chain surveys...ahh fond memories :)
But really, I think it's a great way for us to get to know one another better!
And you be forewarned, I'm a big fan of over-explaining.
Heeeeere we gooooo!

1. Age

I am a ripe ol' age of 23 :)

2. Area of country (be as specific or vague as your comfort levels allow :)

I'm preeetty sure if you poked around in my various social media accounts, you'd find my exact location, but for now I'll say Central Illinois. I was raised about an hour outside of Chicago and did my undergrad at ISU.

3. # of previous relationships (....as in, at least "FB official")

Well, if we're only going with FB offish, then I have been in two relationships. Although the first wasn't FB offish because I didn't have FB until freshman year of college and we dated my senior year of high school.

Maybe I'll write more sometime about my past relationships/what I learned (I just realized that I haven't really talked about them) ...but basically it's been a little over 3 years since my last relationship.

4. What do you do with your life? School? Work? Both? Neither?

I graduated from college with my degree in Psychology in 2012 and was offered a job exactly a week later :)
I currently work full-time in the Pro-Life movement (though I choose to refrain from saying which organization I work for)

5. What's your family like? (let's see some pics!)

Ahhhh my family. They're great. I'm the eldest of 4 kids, 2 boys and 2 girls. I did a series on them back when I first started blogging.

post-mass photo op

It's me, Tommy (21), Michael (20), and Tara (17).

PS I'm the shortest in my fam at 5'10''
L to R: Michael, Morgan, Tara, Tommy
My parents are fabulous too and we as a family are super tight-knit.
(our initials go as such: JJMTMT...pretty funny :)

But that's just my immediate family. We're also really close with both sides of my extended family.
My dad is the youngest of 8 kids and we're blessed to be close with our aunts, uncles, and cousins.

This is most of my Dad's side...we're missing one of my cousins and her family.

And my mom is the eldest of 3 and her family...oh man, they're crazy. Like in the best way possible.

this is from 2011, but it's the most recent group pic we've got!
and we're missing one of my cousins and his family :(

cousin tradition! squeeze on Granny's couch!
little Lilly is the first great-grandchild! she's a doll!
Uncle Tom is who we get all the crazy genes from...

But I think one of the things I love most about my family is that we know our extended family. That's one thing that's always been important to my parents. I know my great-aunts and uncles on both sides as well as my 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc cousins. We not only know our extended extended family, but we're close with them, too!
And we LOVE family vacations and we LOVE family reunions and we LOVE family holidays.
Some people tolerate their families...we soak time up with them as often as possible :)

P.S. both of my brothers are single, soooo if you're interested...jkjk. kind of. ;)

6. How did your parents meet? (let's hear the story!!)

My parents met on a blind date set up by my great-grandmother.
No joke.

Some background knowledge: my great-grandpa died when my mom was 12 but my great-grandma remarried when she was in her 60s and my (step)great-grandpa was the only one I ever knew. He had 3 sons so when they married, my mom inherited (step)uncles and some (step)aunts (therefore my step great uncles and aunts).

You're welcome for the family history. You'll need it later.

So my mom was living with my GGs after she graduated from college and earned some extra cash by cleaning for her (step)aunt. While dusting the family photos, she asked who one of the guys was and jokingly asked if he was single because he was kinda cute. Turns out my aunt had a younger (and single!) brother. My aunt talked to GGma and she thought it was a GREAT idea. Grandma had met Dad all of maybe two times, but she knew he was cute and polite, so hey, what else do you need?

Before they went out for the first time, my GGpa was talking my dad up with all sorts of flattery...
"he's a good Catholic boy!" .... "he's got a good job!" ... "he likes to play cards!"

That last one reeeeally got my mom thinking he was a winner ;)

So aaaaanyway, my dad drove up from Chicagoland to Milwaukee where my mom was living and they danced all night...literally.
Because the bars never closed. You just lifted your feet up for them to sweep underneath.
**CURSE YOU IL WITH YOUR 2AM LAST-CALLS!!!!**
Which would explain why they were out until 4AM "talking".
At which point my dad drove my mom home and my GGma was up waiting for her.
Since he was a scaredy cat, Dad didn't walk Mom up to the door, but she understood.
GGma was scary when she was mad.

But they both knew that it was love and 2 years later, they wed!
Which then turned my mom's great aunt into her sister-in-law. It's not weird if you know the story.

And that, folks, is why I would never turn down a blind date set-up...sometimes it works out!

7. Confirmation saint name and why (if you were Catholic at that point in your journey)

I made my confirmation during my sophomore year of high school (normal for our parish) and I chose St. Cecilia as my confirmation saint name. I chose her, first because I love music and second because Cecelia is my maternal grandmother's middle name.

8. Favorite Gospel?

Ok, I'll be honest...I don't really have one. I love them all and haven't ever done a study of the Gospels so I'm not biased. But I do love John 3:16 so I'll choose John :)

9. What are the top three qualities you're looking for in a husband? (who knows, maybe one of us has a cousin or friend to connect you with! ;)

haha I love this question and the reasoning behind it! Can we assume that "Catholic" is a given? I'm going to say so :) ...with that out of the way, my top three qualities are:

1. He must be kind and affectionate
Hopefully this is self-explanatory...but authentic kindness is so important as well as affection. Maybe these two qualities don't naturally go hand in hand, but I guess I've always associated them with one another.

2. He must be intelligent
I've dated guys before who couldn't carry on a conversation about anything but sports...he doesn't have to be a rocket scientist, but I want to be able to rant about autism theories or philosophical topics and for him to be able to keep up AND contribute!

3. He must be tall (at least 6'0'')
Maybe this sounds superficial, but it's important to me...thus far, I haven't been attracted to shorter guys. Plus, I think there's a certain comfort that comes with being with a guy who you know can protect you...shouldn't have to be the other way around.

10. If you've done online dating, do you have any advice or experiences to share?

I've never done online dating, but I would say it's important to be 100% honest and upfront with what you're looking for. That way, people know exactly what they're going to get. (ex: being upfront about looking for a chaste relationship, etc.)

11. Tweetable single-lady advice (140 characters or less of what you'd say to other single ladies)

12. What is your favorite thing to do outside of blogging and work/school?

Fact about me: I don't just have one favorite, so I can't narrow this down. Outside of work, there's not much free time (since my hours are usually late morning-ish to 9 or 10PM) and when I'm not having major writers block (read: almost always), most of my free time is writing posts. BUT I have hobbies! I do.

I like to sew. I LOVE to read (with no internet in my apt, I read 3 books last week). I like crafts...painting things and such. I like to cook and bake. I like to sing and jam with people (I was in a worship band in college).

BUT really, if I have a bunch of free time, I love hanging out with my friends. Especially ones with babies. And more often than not, I spend my free weekends helping my friends do something in their homes...usually painting, but I am also a GREAT caulk-er. As if on cue for this post, Sunday night I painted said baby-having friend's kitchen.
It was great.

TAG!

Amanda tagged me in this game of...whatever we're calling it...tag, mayhaps?
Well, I can't resist a good Q&A, so here goes nothing!

-----------------

1.) The first rule is to post these rules.
2.) Post a photo of yourself then write 11 things about you/your life.
3.) Answer the questions for you set in the original post.
4.) Create 11 new questions and tag people to answer them.
5.) Go to their blog/twitter to tell them you have tagged them.

I like chips.

11 things about me:

1. ....ok, this is a lot harder than I thought it would be....usually when people ask for me to say something that they wouldn't know, I'd say that I have a blog....but....duh.

2. OH! Here's something people might find interesting....Marc Cardaronella is the DRE at my parish! How awesome is that?! I didn't know he was a big deal until a couple weeks ago. Pretty sweet, yeah?

3. I wish life was a musical or at least had a background soundtrack playing constantly....I just really love music!

4. Umm.....oh, I can sing. Pretty well, I hear. (pun not intended ;) On my way back from NC this weekend, we were belting Defying Gravity. I was impressed by my skillz.

5. I think I'm really funny. Like, I laugh at the funny things I say. It's quite amusing.

6. So, I'm the oldest of 4 kids....I have two brothers and a sister....and according to my family, I'm the one who starts the most trouble. They call me the "pot stirrer" because I come home, stir everything up and then back away to watch the crazy ensue.

7. My family and I are really close...and we're all really close with our extended family which is a huge blessing. I was the maid-of-honor in my cousin's wedding this June and gave a BA toast....the best pictures are below:

isn't she a beautiful bride?!
8. Sorry...that last one turned into a photo-dump. Whoops. Well, I live about 4 hours from my family (minus my brother out at PITT), so it's a good thing that I have friends right here in town....and more than are moving here this month! My favorite, by far is this little monkey:

9. And going off of that last one, I love babies. A LOT. It's a joke in my family that I have a baby radar that can sense a baby from miles away. That might be only a slight exaggeration.

10. I've never been out of the U.S. Not even to Canada. It's kind of sad, but I've seen a lot of our nation, so that's a plus :)

11. My first name is both Irish Gaelic (meaning rocky crag) and German (Morgen = morning), my middle name is Catholic (Veronica), and my last name is Irish (it's a "Mc" :)....and I'm half Irish, half German, and 100% Catholic :)

Questions Amanda asked of me:

1. What is your favorite thing to blog about, or which post of yours is your favorite?
hmmm well, I obviously really like talking about single-people topics, seeing that that's pretty much all I post these days but I mostly enjoy writing about things around me, things I've observed or experienced that interest me...yeah. And I'll cheat....this is one of my favorite posts :)

2. Who is your favorite band at the moment?
agghhh Amanda! Don't do this to me! I love music. Like, ALL music. Even head-banging metal music* but right now I love me some Mumford and Sons....and Jack Johnson.....and Lady Antebellum....and The Band Perry....and Lorde....and....I'll stop now.

*in specific settings

3. If you were going to die tomorrow and you could go anywhere before you died, where would you spend your last day on earth?
Millerville, MN - my family has been going up there every year since before I was born for vacation in the summer and it's my favorite place in the world. My best friends are up there and I just love it. Just a few cabins smack dab in between two lakes surrounded by soybean and corn fields.
Heaven.

4. What is your favorite prayer (outside of the Mass)?
I really love the Salve Regina. English and Latin. Sung or recited. I love it all.

5. What song or movie do you turn on at the end of bad day?
ooooo...I don't really have one that I turn to currently, but Dark Blue by Jack's Mannequin was my jam back in HS. Used to play that bad boy on repeat.

6. Which season of the year is your favorite and why?
I truly and honestly love them all, but if I had to choose, I would say Spring. New life beginning and the smell of spring in the air after dry, cold winters is the best.

7. Which liturgical season is your favorite and why?
Triduum. Hands down. I fell in love with the Triduum season during college when it felt like we were basically living at the Cathedral. The best year was when after the Easter Vigil mass, Bishop Jenky invited all college students into his home for a party. Best. Day. Ever.

8. Would you rather be taking pictures or be in the pictures?
Can I choose both? Lately, I'm in more pictures than I take myself, but I don't really have a preference.
But I'm definitely not one of those "no no no I don't want to be in the picture!" kind of people :)

9. What is the best deal you ever got on a piece of clothing and what did you buy?
I've been lucky multiple times, but usually when I'm on vacation somewhere....but I think the best deal I ever got was at White House | Black Market at an outlet mall in Gulf Shores, AL.
I bought a silk skirt for $9.99....I'm not sure what original retail was but their skirts usually range from $50-$100.
So yeah. Awesome.

10. What is the best piece of advice/or wisdom you ever heard from your mother?
Whatever's meant to be will be - no sense in worrying about what you can't control.

11. If you could go back in time five years and tell yourself one thing, what would you tell your younger self?
Chill the heck out. Stop freaking out about your future....planning ahead isn't a bad thing, but you have to expect that changes will occur. Life is a lot easier if you learn to adapt and thrive during transition.

Questions for those tagged:

1. What is the longest roadtrip you've ever taken?
2. Where was your favorite vacation destination you've ever been?
3. Favorite frugal-ish place to clothing shop? (need some help over here! :)
4. Easiest I-worked-all-day-but-don't-want-McDonalds-AGAIN recipe? (link-up if you can!)
5. What did you want to be when you were younger?
6. Any books you're currently reading?
7. What is your favorite TV show at the moment? (or coming back in the Fall!)
8. True or False: ice cream makes most bad days better?
9. Do you journal? If so, where and what time of day?
10. What are your favorite fruits and veggies?
11. Do you thrift? What was your best find?

And I'll tag:

Jordan @ Occasional Humor
Katy @ Young American Catholic
Katrina @ Cedars & Tiny Flowers
Stephanie @ Captive the Heart
Lauren @ Focus on the Fiat
Stacey @ The Girl with the Lily Tattoo

Amanda tagged pretty much everyone I would have initially thought of, but I'm excited to have the chance to introduce y'all to some newbie bloggers....and hopefully this will give some of them (*ahem*JORDAN*) the kick in the pants they need to get back into the blogging world ;)

Five Favs

Linking up with Grace, who's hosting 5Fs this week....

[1] NFP week

Sooooo this week is NFP week.....and thanks to all of my lovely NFP practicing friends, there have been a bunch of awesome articles that have come my way. This one is especially fabulous....and makes me want to send it along to some of my childhood friends who use the pill but also really want to have children in the future....those side effects, dude. So much for being fully aware of all the facts...

[2] The Privilege of Being a Woman

I started re-reading Alice von Hildebrand's The Privilege of Being a Woman....loving it even more than I did the first time...aaaaand then I used it to smash a giant spider on my bedroom wall. BAM! Talk about ironic. :)

[3] Black Velvet: Toasted Caramel

While I was on vaca, our family friends introduced me to this stuff. I'm telling you, best. stuff. ever. I NEVER drink any alcohol on the rocks (shots are more my pace...jkjk), but this stuff...mmmmmm mmm. Delish.

Since I've been home (more than 3 weeks), I've been on the hunt for my very own bottle and when even Binny's didn't carry it I lost all hope....but good ol Meijer came to the rescue. Why don't I shop there ALL the time??

[4] Family Pics

stolen from FB
Ok, so we all know how I'm obsessed with babes. Which is why I have to show you this pic of my dear friends whose son just turned a month yesterday...I love it so much. Simply precious.

[5] Swiffer Commercials

Alright, Swiffer, you've got me. I'm fully convinced that you're the best brand, all thanks to Lee and Morty. These two are SO FREAKING CUTE. You HAVE to watch this. I can't even handle it.
Here's the shorter version if you can't take three minutes to watch the cutest old people ever.

Hope you're having a happy Hump Day!
Sorry, couldn't help myself.

prayers and recommends

I'm sure many of you read House Unseen. Please keep Dwija and her beautiful family in your prayers. They lost their youngest baby, Nicholas, this Monday.

Speaking of prayers, I'll be joining up with the community at PrayMoreNovenas.com for the St. Anne Novena. I'm offering this novena up for the Borobia family and my future husband. You can read about the significance of this novena over here, which is the story about my good friend, Annie (who also happens to be my boss's wife).

Don't you love it when you stumble across an awesome new blog?? Yeah. Me too. So go over and check out CrossAmerica.
source
Dan is walking from Oregon (I LOVE that state!) to Virginia and he just passed his 4 MILLION step mark. How freaking hardcore is that?! So inspiring. Here's a Catholic Post article about his journey and purpose. You'll love it.

Y'all know about my obsession with Camp Patton. If you haven't read the latest Conversations with Julia post, we can't be friends anymore. lo siento.

I want to be her best friend.
mmkay that's all.

as of late...

Seems I've slumped into another blogging rut and just.can't.get.out.

Life has been pretty insane lately. To give you a glimpse while keeping my thoughts in order, I give you...handy dandy bullet points...

  • I signed a lease for my very first very own one bedroom apartment. Holy cow. I'm super excited.
    • can't wait to have an entire space to.my.self.
    • also can't wait to be able to walk around with or without clothing just cause I can. TMI?

  • I'm currently home for the next few weeks building my support team
    • We've just changed our funding system and are now each responsible for raising the funds necessary to fulfill our missions on campus.
    • Super daunting.
    • I'm trying to see it as a challenge.

What I Wore on Christmas

coming out of my new clothes and chocolate littered cave to participate in Grace's Christmas link-up

The fam has been doing midnight mass for the past few years....which has turned semi-hazardous ever since I became "legal" and include deliciouso red moscato with dinner....if you think that midnight mass would be hard to stay awake through, try having a couple of glasses of red pre-mass. This year wasn't horrible, I maintained altertness thanks to the rowdy children (and adults!) in front and behind us who obviously haven't been to mass since last Christmas. Not that I'm judging....

thanks to the sister for capturing all flattering pics

Christmas Day itself is pretty chill around here and as my mother says, you know you've got a house full of teens and older when the parents are the ones waking everyone up to open presents. Just so you can get an idea of what my apparel will consist of all day today:

Photo credit goes to the I'm-not-getting-out-of-this-chair-so-deal-with-the-awkward-angle sister and photo-bombing credit goes to mi padre. And they wonder where I got my skillz.

Merry Christmas to you and yours!

surprise! rodents.

I think squirrels are cute.
I like how they pounce around in the grass and nibble on whatever it is they eat.
I like the chattering noises that they make.

just look at that little guy! so cuuuuute!
But I recently had an epiphany, and it wasn't a good one.

Squirrels are just rats with bushy tails.

Imposters!

Now, I don't hate rats. In fact, I did my senior lab with white lab rats who I trained to complete obstacle courses through operant conditioning. And they were cute and smart and funny.
But they lived in cages and the only time they roamed free was when they were in the 2'X3' training pods.

Squirrels ROAM free EVERYWHERE.
AND they're bigger than the 8 oz rats I worked with.

Sick.

Yet, despite my horror at this realization, I can't help but think they're cute. Especially this little one that lives by the convent near work...he only has half a tail and we call him Stumpy. And he's adorable.

what's the point?
I don't know.
just observations... :)

happy day to you!
...watch out for all of those rodents...

waterworks

When I was younger, I was not a crier. In fact, I would laugh at my mom for crying during a movie. The only exception to my lack of emotion was when we watched "A Walk to Remember"...pretty sure it took twice as long to watch that one because we kept stopping it to calm down...and we went through a full box of kleenex...
But truly, ask anyone...I did not cry.

That all changed when I left for college.
All of the sudden, a commercial like this would come on...

...and I would be a blubbering mess.

Thus another one of my manymanymany theories about the mystery of life.
I have a theory that when you leave for college, or move out on your own, something changes inside of you. Emotions are high, there are a lot of changes that you have to deal with, but at the same time, you want to be grown-up and mature and so you bottle those emotions as best you can. However, they're still there and you have to deal with them in some way and that's when the whole crying-for-no-reason phenomenon comes in.

Hey, don't take my word for it...there are plenty of people who I can point your towards to back my theory up.....actually, I only have one other person who I know that this theory is true for, but whatever. I'm juuuuust saying....

Now excuse me while I pull myself together....that Jif commercial really did me in...

fun facts

  • I love trashy television...think The Bachelorette and Keeping up with the Kardashians
  • I hate waiting...especially if I'm waiting for someone for more than 5 mins
  • I really don't like the smell of cigarette smoke...cigars and pipes are OK, but not cigarettes
  • I whistle. Very well and a whole lot. Usually when I'm happy.
  • I have fun causing trouble. Especially when I'm back home with my siblings
  • I've sewn a couple of dresses from scratch
  • I really do feel naked when I don't have nail polish on. And when I forget my rings.
  • I hate eating soup with a non-soup spoon.
  • I love babies. Like, a lot. A lot, a lot.

sorry I'm not sorry

I know its killing you waiting for me to finally return with daily posts buuuuuut that might not happen for awhile. Cause I'm exhausted, yo.
I was in Chicago yesterday and today AGAIN hanging out with supa cool Loyola and Northwestern kids and when I got back, I realized that not only was it only 5pm but its also ONLY WEDNESDAY. And to make matters worse, I'm out of rum "WHY IS ALL THE RUM GONE?!?!"
What a nightmare. And to give you an even further idea of how tired I am, I'm laying in my bed trying to get the motivation to get up and put my laundry in the dryer. Because I'm basically out of all my regular clothes and completely out if some necessities, if you know what I mean. TMI? Get over it.
I'll leave you with this pic and a promise to return asap. Perhaps this weekend.
That's some "Punking" beer, that is. Delish.

a century

Hola.

So sorry that I've been absent for what must seem like a century...I'm working on a recap of my super duper awesome weekend in STL with Jordan but this week has been insanity because of prepping for our conference this weekend.

But had to pop in and say

HEY EVERYONE! YOU SHOULD CONGRATULATE ME 'CAUSE THIS IS MY 100TH POST!

Congrats, self. I'm so proud.

Til next time...

whaaaat?

oh em gee. everything looks different.

yup.

I felt like it was time for a change...the "hanging on for dear life" slogan or whatchamacallit doesn't really apply anymore...at least for the moment, my life is in a pretty good place. I mean, God is constantly challenging me and throwing me for a loop, but the image of me hanging onto a cliff by my fingertips doesn't really feel like a reality anymore...

buuuuuuut yeah.

that's all.

Why I love having a car: Part 2

...because I no longer need to use the emergency hairspray and deodorant that I have in a drawer at the office on a daily basis (though it's probably good to have...just in case...)

...because I can do my hair in the morning and not have a helmet crease when I get to work (and no, I don't wear the helmet while I'm driving)

...because when I get to work it doesn't take a good 15 minutes for me to stop sweating.

...because I can finally wear heels and skirts to work.

...because I no longer have to depend on anyone other than myself to get around!

And since I know y'all have been waiting with bated breath for pics of the little beauty, heeeeeere you are!

You're welcome.

Any and all suggestions of what I should name her will be taken into consideration.

dueces.

Why I love having a car: Part 1

...because I can now feed myself on more than a bi-monthly basis.

...because I can bring coffee into the office in the morning without spilling it all over me.

...because I can spray a normal dosage of perfume before I leave the house and have full confidence that I'll still smell good when I get to work.

Stay tuned for Part 2 and pictures tomorrow!
